Most non THX Certified Cinemas place the-behind-the screen speakers on simple speaker stands. This setup leaves the audio uncontrolled, resulting in unimpressive sound. In addition, the speakers do not work as well together to create a smooth audio playback experience that tracks with the onscreen action – rather, the audio can be distracting and “jump” across the screen.
In a THX Certified Cinema the massive screen channel speakers are housed in a behind the screen acoustical baffle wall. The baffle wall is approximately the size of the screen, providing a solid, smooth and uninterrupted surface for audio to create a large sound image that immerses you in the movie. Also, the speakers work together to create a seamless sound image that tracks with the onscreen action.

| The baffle wall in a THX Certified Cinema controls the sound behind the screen – projecting a smooth audio experience out to the audience. |
Without the baffle wall, sound is uncontrolled behind the screen – producing a weak sound image that is unevenly projected. |
