How often do you find yourself listening to music at your computer? Subjecting yourself to bad computer speakers is like hiring The Rolling Stones to play your wedding, but then forcing them play in the pantry.
For many years Logitech has been making high-quality multimedia speaker systems, at a modest price point, that have pushed the boundaries on how good “computer speakers” can actually sound. Their latest offering, the Z906, is small, has over 500 watts, and best of all, is THX Certified.
The Z906 has four identical satellites and a matching horizontal center channel. All are wall mountable and feature identical 3-inch drivers. The ported subwoofer has a side-firing 8-inch woofer. Embedded in the subwoofer cabinet is a 500-watt amplifier that sends 67-watts to each of the satellites, with the remaining 165-watts reserved just for the sub itself.
A separate control box shows the selected input, how many speakers are getting a signal, and which speakers are active. Buttons on the front let you sort through these options, or you can use the included wireless remote. There’s even a big volume knob so you can turn up, or turn down, in a hurry.
On the back of the sub are a variety of digital and analog inputs. There are two optical digital inputs, a single coax digital input, a 5.1 analog input with 1/8th mini-plugs (for an analog connection to a computer, for example) and a stereo RCA input. What does all this mean? It means you can hook up to several analog or digital sources. Your DVD player, cable box, PS3, and iPod, can all be hooked up at the same time – even your Blu-ray player, as long as it has analog audio outputs (you’ll need RCA-to-mini adapters). The Z906 decodes Dolby Digital and DTS internally, to play back games and DVDs in all their 5.1 glory. The 3D Stereo mode will spread stereo sound to all 5 speakers to fill a room with music. The satellite speakers connect with standard speaker wire, so if the included cabling doesn’t reach far enough to put the speakers where you want, any speaker cable will work (ideally, THX Certified speaker cable).
To meet THX’s strict certification guidelines, THX works with manufacturers during product development. All multimedia speakers must undergo a series of tests, ensuring users will experience quality reference level sound (85bd) at 2 feet 4 inches. THX Engineers work tirelessly with manufacturers to ensure products deliver maximum performance in order to achieve the coveted THX certification status.
Being THX Certified is what puts the Z906 in a class by itself. Pristine audio quality is a given, with crystal clear highs and deep, powerful lows. The Logitech Z906 offers big sound quality, with the size and simplicity of an all-in-one system. It could quite possibly be the best upgrade your computer will ever get. Your ears will thank you.
The Logitech Z906 will be available March 2011 and can be pre-ordered now at Logitech.com
