ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, N.J., Sept 08, 2010 - LG Electronics USA today announced the availability of the world's first 3D HDTV to be THX® Certified - the LG Infinia PX950 Plasma HDTV series.

PX950 Plasma HDTV First to Meet THX’s Rigorous 3D Testing Standards

ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, N.J., Sept 08, 2010 - LG Electronics USA today announced the availability of the world’s first 3D HDTV to be THX® Certified – the LG Infinia PX950 Plasma HDTV series.

The PX950 continues LG’s history of setting new standards in picture quality. To earn the new THX 3D Display Certification, the PX950 passed more than 400 laboratory tests evaluating left and right eye images for color accuracy, cross-talk, viewing angles and video processing performance. In addition to the first-ever THX 3D Display Certification, the PX950 had to pass THX certification for superior picture quality in 2D, which must be achieved before passing THX 3D certification.

With the push of a button, viewers can select THX 2D or 3D Cinema Modes for pristine 2D and 3D movie experiences from broadcast sources and Blu-ray Discs. The PX950 plasma HDTV recreates the cinematic viewing experience by setting optimum color temperature, luminance and gamma levels.

“THX spent more than a year in the lab developing our certification criteria and testing methodologies for 3D TVs and content,” said Rick Dean, senior vice president at THX. “To present a truly immersive 3D experience in the home, a THX 3D Certified TV must be capable of delivering consistent stereoscopic images with accurate color and clean processing. THX applauds the LG PX950 as the first 3D TV series to pass this rigorous testing to achieve THX certification.”

The PX950 works with the use of active shutter glasses and an emitter built directly into the TV. With 600Hz Max Sub-field Driving, viewers can enjoy the fastest action sequences in gaming, sports and movies. LG’s 3D Plasma Panel also quickly phases out light to produce images that are practically blur-free. LG’s TruBlack Filter helps block external light reflections while maximizing the transmission of internal light to produce deeper blacks and superior contrast levels, and the Dual XD Engine transforms standard definition content into near-high definition quality with an unprecedented level of color accuracy.

“LG is offering ‘Something Better’ in plasma HDTVs with the THX 3D Certified PX950,” said Peter Reiner, senior vice president, marketing, LG Electronics USA. “Not only is this the world’s first THX 3D Certified Plasma, but it includes amazing 2D to 3D Conversion, TruBlack Filter and superior color accuracy, all packaged into LG’s striking slim design.”

The 60- and 50-inch class PX950 plasma HDTVs boast seamless connectivity and a virtually limitless content package with a variety of entertainment options from NetCast(TM) Entertainment Access, including:

Netflix®: Consumers can stream thousands of movies and TV shows, including a growing number of HD titles.

VUDU™: Allows consumers to instantly buy or rent from the largest library of movies in Full HD 1080p resolution, as well as TV titles – with no monthly fees or additional hardware.

Yahoo!® Widgets: Enables access to TV Widgets that allow viewers to interact with popular Internet services and online media through applications specifically tailored to the needs of the watcher, such as up-to-the minute Yahoo! News, Weather and Finance, and new widgets, including CBS, Showtime and CNBC.

YouTube™: Offers the ability to instantly stream millions of Web videos directly from the Internet (without a personal computer).

Picasa&tradel Web Albums: Provides access to Google’s photo software, allowing consumers to view photo albums at the touch of a button.

At only 2.1-inches thin, the PX950 is unassumingly powerful and versatile. Thanks to a wide 3D viewing angle created by self-illuminating pixels, spectators can revel in superb 3D images while sitting or even lying down practically anywhere in front of the TV. In addition, along with the connectivity options of DLNA and NetCast, the PX950 supports the Multi Picture Format (MPF) function, enabling users to connect their 3D cameras to the TV and view their 3D pictures directly on the big screen.

LG’s PX950 series is available now in 60- and 50-inch class screen sizes at manufacturer’s prices of $2,999 and $1,999, respectively.

Venice, Calif. and Atlanta, Georgia – September 8, 2010 – Procella Audio, manufacturer of high-performance high-output speaker systems for home and professional cinema and music applications, announced today that the Procella Audio booth at the upcoming CEDIA Expo will feature a THX Certified Screening Room* designed and constructed by Epic Home Cinema. Exclusive presentations for attending media are scheduled for 10 AM and 2 PM on Thursday, September 23.

The THX Certified Screening Room, showcasing Procella Audio’s flagship speaker system, is designed to the same exacting standards as professional facilities. Initial construction began offsite by Epic Home Cinema of Marietta, Georgia. Before the show, the room will be dismantled, moved to the CEDIA Expo floor, and rebuilt by the Epic team. Once complete, the room will be tested by THX to earn the highly coveted THX certification for residential Screening Rooms.

In order to earn THX certification, residential screening rooms must closely mirror the acoustic performance of a full-blown commercial theater or professional studio. The room itself must meet THX standards for room design and construction, including room dimensions, acoustical environment, sound isolation and viewer sight lines. Additionally, all audio and video components must have either THX Approval or THX certification, and the completed room must pass a final evaluation. THX participates in the entire process, from initial design through the construction phase, and ultimately verifies system performance through a battery of measurements performed onsite by THX engineers.

All audio and video components used in the CEDIA Expo room are either THX Certified for home use or THX Approved for professional studios and cinemas. In addition to Procella, the room will feature products from Stewart Filmscreen, Runco, QSC Audio Products, Meridian and Integra.

The Procella models used in the theater include three active P815s for screen channels, six passive P8 speakers for the surround channels, and two P18 active subwoofers in the baffle wall. Three additional P10 active subwoofers are located in the side and back walls and used as balancing subwoofers. The P815, P8 and P18 have all earned THX Approval for integration into professional facilities, including THX Approved Screening rooms and pm3 rooms (Professional Multichannel Mixing and Monitoring).

“As a manufacturer introducing loudspeakers to the CEDIA audience at Expo, a THX Certified screening room is a dream environment,” said Procella director Chuck Back. Demonstrating speakers at a trade show, whether in a booth, a so-called sound room or a hotel suite, invariably results in frustration due to poor acoustics and high ambient sound levels. Having a properly designed and built room means that attendees and potential customers will be able to accurately evaluate and fully appreciate the performance of Procella speakers. Having previously worked with Epic Home Cinema and THX, I can say their quality of work is unsurpassed.”

”THX Certification ensures that a screening room reproduces exactly what the director intended. Since we have built a THX-certified home theater, we know the amount of time and effort it takes to accomplish this. With the stringent standards and specifications of THX, every aspect of a screening room is inspected and evaluated. Starting with the components, which is exemplified by the incredible performance of Procella Audio and finishing with the optimized acoustical room design, build and calibration, the director’s vision is brought to life. Many home theater companies may promise a high end theater, but THX Certification is the only way to be sure that the final product meets the quality initially promised to the homeowner. The chance to produce this at the CEDIA Expo, and the opportunity to share this with all the attendees is quite an honor,” stated Epic Home Cinema’s Greg Dawkins.

”We applaud Epic Home Cinema and Procella Audio for taking on the challenge of designing a THX Certified Screening Room at CEDIA Expo,” said Andrew Poulain, of the THX Studio and Cinema team. “Meeting the THX standards for acoustic performance and sound isolation is next to impossible on a tradeshow floor. The result of this collaboration is testament to the design talent of Epic and the performance capabilities of Procella Audio and all of the other THX partners involved.”

Editors and writers unable to attend the media presentations are encouraged to contact Procella to set up private appointments during show hours.

*THX certification pending final testing by THX.

THX-BluFocus Certification Sets Guidelines and Testing Procedures for Evaluating 3D Audio-Video Quality, Disc Interoperability and the Physiological Effects of 3D

SAN RAFAEL, Calif., August 9, 2010— THX Ltd. has teamed with BluFocus, a quality assurance and advanced testing facility for the home entertainment industry, to build an ecosystem of services to address the technical challenges of 3D post-production. THX®-BluFocus 3D certification sets authoring and production guidelines and testing procedures for evaluating 3D Audio-Video quality, 3D Blu-ray disc and player Interoperability, and the physiological effects of 3D on home viewers.

“The long-term success of 3D in the home depends heavily on content producers and consumer electronics manufacturers delivering a comfortable and compelling experience for today’s first wave of consumer adopters,” said Rick Dean, senior vice president at THX. “Our partnership with BluFocus complements the work THX is doing with leading HDTV manufacturers and other industry organizations to drive standards for 3D visual quality and usability.”

One of the biggest reported concerns among consumers is experiencing fatigue from 3D video and glasses. THX and BluFocus are researching root causes of viewer fatigue to better understand the physiological effects of 3D. The goal is to work closely with content producers to implement best practices and guidelines for all 3D elements, including onscreen characters, objects, graphics and subtitles. THX-BluFocus certification also evaluates how 2D-to-3D conversion adds depth to the picture, and whether this added depth results in creative errors or flaws that deviate from the storyline or causes viewer fatigue.

“The added dimension of 3D brings with it more technical challenges than traditional 2D post-production and authoring, and requires more steps in the production chain,” said Paulette Pantoja, CEO of BluFocus. “The certification program we are creating with THX will help refine 3D post-production and authoring and help content producers minimize technical flaws long before 3D content is broadcast, streamed or authored on optical disc.”

During the THX-BluFocus 3D AV certification process, engineers analyze Left and Right Eye images frame-by-frame to ensure they retain the sharpness and detail of the original master video elements. All audio material is also fully evaluated to make sure they meet studio Reference Level and remain faithful to the master recordings. In addition to focusing on 3D Audio-Video quality, THX-BluFocus certification also evaluates Blu-ray Disc and Blu-ray player interoperability to ensure they play seamlessly together.

THX-BluFocus 3D Certification Categories

THX-BluFocus certification will be offered to the producers and distributors of movies, television programs, games and other content. When shopping for a 3D Blu-ray Disc or digital download, consumers will be instructed to look for the following THX-BluFocus certification logo and icons on disc packaging and digital artwork.

UPPER SADDLE RIVER, NJ, 7/20/10 – Onkyo, a brand renowned worldwide for quality home entertainment technology, has introduced the world’s first THX® I/S Plus™ Certified (Integrated System) and 3D-Ready packaged home theater system. This type of system, popularly known as a “home theater in a box” or HTiB, consists of seven theater loudspeakers, a subwoofer for deep-bass sound effects, and an audio-video receiver that is fully compatible with state-of-the-art HD video players and video displays, including all the latest 3D technologies. It is compatible with the mandatory formats for 3D video broadcast content of “Side-By-Side (Half)” and “Top-and-Bottom” formats.

The Onkyo HT-S9300THX receiver has four 3D-Ready HDMI 1.4a inputs for connection to modern audio/video source components, and it can upscale video from any input source to the maximum 1080p HDMI output resolution. The system receiver includes lossless Dolby & DTS high definition audio processing, Dolby ProLogic IIz height channel processing, and numerous other high performance sound processing features from THX, Audyssey, and Onkyo.

“With 3D and THX, this package offers remarkable value,” said Paul Wasek, Onkyo’s marketing manager. “As one of the most enthusiastic suppliers of THX Certified components, Onkyo has long recognized the importance ensuring that our customers experience movie sound effects exactly as the producer and sound engineer intended.”

“Our collaboration with Onkyo has produced an affordable, all-in-one home theater system with a sonic punch that puts most HTiBs to shame,” said Graham McKenna, Director of PR at THX. “Designed for movie fans and gamers who crave multichannel sound, the HT-S9300THX delivers every bass note, sound effect and dialogue like it was captured in the studio.”

The Onkyo HT-S9300THX was awarded THX I/S Plus certification based on THX’s independent testing of the combined audio performance of this system’s receiver, speakers, and a powerful 12-inch subwoofer. The specially designed front loudspeakers use a THX-developed dual-woofer array that optimizes the sound field for a sonic presentation that is remarkably close to that found in the best THX movie theaters. The system includes THX Surround EX™; THX listening modes for Music, Movies and Games; and THX Loudness Plus™, a sophisticated volume-control technology which maintains surround impact at low listening levels.

The HT-S9300THX also provides for easy surround sound speaker set up with Audyssey 2EQ room acoustics correction technology, and provides improved sound enjoyment with Audyssey Dynamic EQ and Audyssey Dynamic Volume processing. It includes Onkyo’s proprietary Music Optimizer, which improves the sound of compressed music files for playback with loudspeakers, and four DSP modes for various gaming scenarios.

All video inputs can be upscaled to 1080p video, regardless of native resolution, via Faroudja DCDi Cinema™ processor, which also removes the jaggies during the video signal deinterlacing process, resulting in smooth progressive-scan video images.

The receiver employs Onkyo’s new overlaid graphical OSD (on screen display) for seamless adjustment of settings while still viewing the program in the background. A proprietary rear-panel Universal Port can be used to connect an optional Onkyo UP-A1 dock for iPod/iPhone and UP-HT1 HD Radio tuner module. The receiver also includes Onkyo’s HDMI Thru feature, which provides automatic source-to-TV switching when the receiver is in the standby mode. This allows children to enjoy programs using a TV’s built-in speakers without the need to use the receiver’s controls.

The HT-S9300THX will be available at the end of July with a suggested retail price of $1,099.

Since 1946 Onkyo has been passionately committed to developing audio products that deliver uncommon performance, quality and value. Bundling proprietary technologies and innovations with other sound-enhancing exclusives, Onkyo continues to created award winning products that are lauded by many of the industry leading audio publications. The company’s philosophy is to deliver products that are superbly designed and built to a consistently outstanding standard of excellence.
NEW YORK, April 26, 2010 — For the first time in the festival’s history, the Tribeca Film Festival will premiere a feature film, Keep Surfing, on a television ― LG Electronics’ new “Infinia” LED high-definition televisions (HDTVs).

Keep Surfing’ to Premiere on New LG Infinia LED HDTV with THX Certification

NEW YORK, April 26, 2010 — For the first time in the festival’s history, the Tribeca Film Festival will premiere a feature film, Keep Surfing, on a television ― LG Electronics’ new “Infinia” LED high-definition televisions (HDTVs).

LG Infinia HDTVs are designed to deliver the ultimate in picture quality, bringing the director’s screening room into your living room. As the only LED LCD HDTVs in the United States to receive THX Display Certification, LG’s LE8500 and LX9500 Infinia series provide “something better” in home entertainment allowing viewers to experience the exact same colors, shadows and details as moviegoers in the theater.

Actress Jamie-Lynn Sigler, best known for her role as Meadow on “The Sopranos,” is hosting the private premiere of filmmaker Björn Richie Lob’s Keep Surfing tonight in the Tribeca Grand Hotel’s penthouse suite. Lob’s film, which chronicles river-surfing on the Eisbach in Munich, Germany, was shot in various formats including 16mm and 35mm, providing stunning shots of the landscape and river.

“Keep Surfing took 10 years to complete. I want the audience to experience not only the passion of the surfers, but the beauty of the river and environment surrounding them,” said Lob.

According to Geoffrey Gilmore, chief creative officer, Tribeca Enterprises,

“More consumers are looking to bring the film festival experience home and with the evolution of LG’s technology to provide theater-quality images, consumers have a greater opportunity for high quality screening experiences at home.”

THX is known for its design and certification of world-class cinemas, film mastering and post-production. Its Certified Display program represents a superior benchmark to aid consumers when selecting a new HDTV. The THX Certified LED HDTVs feature THX Mode, a playback setting designed to recreate the same color levels used in the Blu-ray mastering studio, providing viewers at home with the same viewing experience as moviegoers in the theater.

“THX certification candidates undergo a rigorous design and laboratory testing process, which includes 200 THX bench tests covering more than 400 data points to ensure accurate color and exceptional image quality and signal processing performance,”

said Rick Dean, senior vice president, THX.

“No other manufacturer’s LED LCD HDTVs on the market today have been able to meet these stringent requirements.”

Infinia is the flagship of LG’s new LED LCD HDTV line. Leading these introductions is the Full LED Slim technology. The unique backlight structure on its Full LED Slim models (LX9500 and LE8500) allows for the Infinia line’s ultra-slim depth and picture quality worthy of THX Display Certification. LG is also the first manufacturer to include the “THX Bright Room” setting which optimizes the contrast, gamma and other settings for watching movies in rooms with a lot of ambient light.

By simply selecting one of the THX modes on an Infinia model, consumers can easily turn their living room into a screening room with just the touch of a button. Together, these features provide consumers with infinite possibilities in home entertainment. The LX9500 and LE8500 Inifina series each include 55- and 47-inch class models (54.6 inches diagonal and 47.0 inches diagonal, respectively).

LG Electronics USA also is the official HDTV sponsor of the Festival and has installed more than 50 LG HDTVs and a host of Blu-ray Disc players in movie theaters, box offices and special event locations throughout lower Manhattan during the 12-day festival. These screens are showing content promoting the Festival, movie trailers and premiere schedules. For more information, please visit: www.LG.com.

3D Streaming Demonstration to Feature THX Media Director, Microsoft Silverlight and THX Certified Home Theater System

NAB Show 2010, Las Vegas, April 12, 2010 – At the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB), THX Ltd. and other partners will showcase the world’s first live high-definition (HD) 3 dimensional (3D) streaming demonstration using Microsoft Silverlight, THX® Media Director™ and a complete THX Certified home theater system. THX® Media Director™ will be integrated with the 3D demonstration to enable home theater components to automatically configure and switch between 3D and 2 dimensional (2D) playback settings as content is streamed live.

The NAB demo will take place at the Microsoft booth # SL220 and will also showcase the capabilities of Level 3’s global internet backbone, Silverlight and Internet Information Services (IIS) Smooth Streaming and Inlet Technologies’ Spinnaker™ multi-screen real-time encoding solution. Film and TV production company, TVN GROUP, will provide live HD 3D content from its studio in Germany. The demo will show how content providers can use these technologies to capture and distribute 3D streaming content to TVs and other home entertainment devices.

“Microsoft has been on the forefront of game-changing entertainment technologies and we are pleased to team with them to integrate THX Media Director into Silverlight for this 3D streaming demonstration,” said Rick Dean, senior vice president at THX Ltd. and chairman of the 3D@Home Consortium. “THX Media Director simplifies the 3D experience, enabling TVs and other devices to select the appropriate playback settings automatically, letting users enjoy the benefits of 3D without constantly reaching for the remote control.”

The introduction of 3DTV brings with it new playback modes, user interfaces and an added layer of complexity for consumers. Using descriptors in the form of metadata, THX Media Director communicates 3D and 2D video processing, picture size, sound encoding and other critical information to home theater devices, enabling them to select the correct playback features automatically. This simplifies the user experience, allows CE brands to showcase signature 3D and 2D features, and assures content providers that the artistic look and feel is accurately represented on playback.

“Microsoft is pleased that THX has invested early in supporting Silverlight and the next-generation application development platform,” said Brian Goldfarb, director of the developer platform group at Microsoft Corp. “THX Media Director provides a seamless, high-quality viewing experience for both 2D and 3D entertainment.”

Beaverton, OR – March 3, 2010 – Runco®, the leading brand in luxury home theater video solutions and pioneering partner that offered the first THX® Certified home theater projectors and display products, is pleased to announce that the Runco VX-33i and VX-33d DLP® home cinema projectors and the QuantumColor™ Q-750i and Q-750d lampless LED home theater projectors have each received THX Display certification. The goal of THX certification, which was founded by legendary filmmaker George Lucas, is to recreate the power and performance of the cinema in a home theater and these new Runco THX Certified projectors are precisely engineered to bring the ultimate video experience to exceptional home theaters.

Leveraging its expertise in the cinema and movie post-production, THX ensures that certified projectors perform to the rigorous standards outlined in the THX Certified Display program. THX is concerned purely with video performance; their design and testing standard is precise, rigorous and only the best video products achieve THX certification. The THX program is an assurance to buyers that high-definition (HD) and standard-definition (SD) content can be projected with accurate color, luminance levels and video processing capabilities.

The Runco VideoXtreme™ VX-33i and VX-33d home cinema projectors feature the most advanced display technology featuring an ingeniously-engineered 3-chip DLP™ light engine with 1080p SuperOnyx™ DMD™, and Runco-proprietary Vivix™ video processing and scaling to create a truly enveloping and realistic experience. Utilizing proprietary O-Path™ technology and Imaging Science Foundation (ISF™) exacting calibration standards, Runco ensures that light is efficiently culminated in the VX-33i and VX-33d to project ultra-high resolution and brightness, making the VX-33i and VX-33d the perfect projectors to complement even the largest projection screens (greater than 120-inch diagonals) found in the spectacular home cinemas of today’s luxury residences.

The revolutionary QuantumColor lampless LED projectors maximize the benefits of Runco’s new InfiniLight™ illumination technology and pair it with proprietary engineering breakthroughs to create energy-efficient home theater projectors that deliver must-see performance. Runco’s proprietary technologies enable the QuantumColor Series to achieve a new level of customized HD video performance, color production and color management that, until now, has been unachievable in home theater projection. QuantumColor projectors produce immeasurable black/white contrast, deliver definitive ColorContrast™ and redefine projector specifications in the industry today.

THX has created a wide range of tests for projection and display products based on cinema and video industry best practices and proprietary THX methodologies. This includes tests for signal processing and image quality. During the certification process, Runco projectors are thoroughly analyzed by THX to ensure that they can present content at the best possible resolution with the correct levels. If necessary, THX also identifies and minimizes sources of motion artifacts, image ghosting, dropped frames and picture noise, and makes recommendations for improving product performance.

“We are thrilled to partner with Runco for these newest high performance projection systems, including the world’s first THX Certified LED projectors,” said Rick Dean, senior vice president of THX. “THX testing and certification aims to reproduce the detailed images, accurate colors and deep black levels found in the filmmaker’s studio, ensuring Runco projectors can deliver stunning visual experiences that are true to director’s vision.”
