THX tune-up™ is Available Free for One Week Worldwide, then Will be Offered at $1.99 in Select Countries

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – January 29, 2013 – THX Ltd. today announced its first mobile app, THX tune-up™, which is now available in the iTunes App Store. THX tune-up is an easy-to-use, interactive app that lets the general consumer use an iOS device to adjust their TVs, projectors and speakers, to get the best performance and enjoyment from their entertainment system – regardless of brand and price.

THX tune-up arrives just in time for this year’s Big Game. According to research conducted by the Retail Advertising and Marketing Association, more than 7.5 million viewers are expected to buy a new television specifically for the game.1 To help all home viewers get on a level playing field and enjoy their new or existing TVs on this big day, THX is offering the app worldwide for free for the first week of its release (January 29 – February 4, 2013). THX tune-up will then be available at its regular price of U.S. $1.99 in select countries.2

“By using the THX tune-up app, sports fans, movie enthusiasts, gamers and even reality show addicts can confirm their TV and sound system are set up correctly. THX tune-up guides consumers simply and easily through picture and sound adjustments to get the best possible entertainment experience from their home system,” said Sandra Benedetto, director of product management, THX Ltd. “We also included fun stuff, like links to THX cinema trailers and our signature “THX® Deep Note™” sound that are bound to evoke envy on a newly ‘tuned-up’ system.”

THX tune-up features

Using specifically custom designed video patterns and audio tests, THX tune-up allows consumers to check that video equipment settings are optimized based on the consumer’s equipment capabilities and lighting environment, and external speakers are working in phase and are connected properly. For instance, color and tint settings are often complicated to adjust properly without special glasses or other unique equipment. THX tune-up uses the iPad or iPhone camera and a special, THX-designed built-in color filter to help consumers easily ensure colors are accurate and skin tones appear natural.

The interactive app provides users step-by-step instructions via narration and text, as well as a detailed guide on how to use all of its features, walking consumers through the following tests:

Video adjustments

Aspect ratio – ensures your TV displays shapes and sizes correctly

Brightness – makes certain shadow details and night scenes are clearly visible

Contrast – ensures that white detail is distinct on your television

Color – make sure colors are bright and vibrant but not overly saturated or cartoonish

Tint – ensures skin tones appear natural and are not too green or red

Audio adjustments

Speaker assignment – ensures that speakers are connected to the correct audio video receiver (AVR) output and intended sound is coming from the correct speaker

Speaker phase – confirms that positive and negative speaker wires are connected correctly and all speakers are in phase

The THX tune-up app is not intended to provide full calibration capabilities. For home theater enthusiasts, calibrators or installers that want a higher level of control and ability to fine-tune their system, THX has a THX Calibrator Blu-ray Disc which is given to graduates from any THX Education class, and is also available in limited quantities at industry tradeshows and events in which THX participates.

Bonus features

THX tune-up is not all about settings – THX added a number of its classic cinema features to the app that can be appreciated over and over again:

“THX Deep Note” – the sound that made THX famous is available at the push of a button in 5.1 surround sound

“THX Trailers” – extraordinary THX trailers (just like the ones in THX Certified Cinemas) are available in HD for users to show off their newly tuned TV and sound systems to friends and family

“Moo Can” – users can tilt their iPhone or iPad to hear the classic “moo” sound from a popular THX cinema trailer

“Ask Tex” – provides consumers with an easy way to get answers to any questions they might have for THX about their home theater equipment and setup process

THX and future apps

With the launch of THX tune-up, THX is laying the groundwork for partner involvement with future applications that can provide a competitive differentiator and feature enhancements for mass consumer products. With a rich history born out of George Lucas’ desire to improve cinema video and audio capabilities, THX hopes to help bridge the inherent hardware capability of smart devices, TVs, speakers and overall home theater systems with content creators’ creative intent to improve the home entertainment experience.

Supported devices

THX tune-up is available now for Apple iOS devices only, including the iPad 2, 3 and 4 with iOS version 5.1.1 or later; the iPad Mini with version 6.0 or later; the iPhone 4, 4S and 5 with iOS version 5.1.1 or later; and the iPod Touch, generation 4 or later with iOS version 5.1.1 or later. THX plans to release an Android version in Spring 2013.

An Apple Digital AV adapter or Lightning Digital AV adapter and HDMI cable, or Apple TV is needed to connect the iPhone or iPad to your system.

Sharp’s New LC-60HQ10 Receives World’s First THX® 4K Certification

LAS VEGAS (CES 2013 – Renaissance Hospitality Suites #530 and #539) – January 8, 2013 – THX Ltd. today announced its THX® 4K Certification program, which features newly developed tests and parameters to ensure that the latest 4K HD televisions are able to present content in full Ultra High-Definition (Ultra HD) resolution with image clarity far superior to that of conventional HDTVs. THX 4K Certified televisions not only meet industry 4K performance guidelines but also present content that most accurately reconstructs the original HD master image. The new Sharp LC-60HQ10 is the world’s first THX 4K Certified display, capable of converting standard HD content into a 4K2K picture with staggering detail and precision, bringing the entertainment experience to life.

The THX 4K Certification program is the only performance standard currently available for higher resolution displays. To be awarded this certification, displays must pass up to 600 rigorous tests and measurements to ensure HD and Ultra HD images are presented accurately and to the highest standard. THX evaluates color precision, clarity, uniformity and detail to analyze how well a 4K or Ultra HD display can depict a variety of critical image elements while minimizing the perceived effects of grain and other flaws. THX Certified displays will feature a new setting, the THX 4K Movie Mode, which delivers the best possible pre-calibrated video settings for viewing Ultra HD and reconstructed HD movies right out-of-the box.

“With consumers today demanding more immersive and compelling home entertainment experiences, the industry has moved beyond HDTVs toward even higher resolution displays that offer a whole new level of entertainment realism in the home,” said Peter Vasay, vice president of technology operations at THX Ltd. “Our new THX 4K Certification process ensures that content viewed on a THX Certified Ultra HD display meets the most exacting video standards achievable in a consumer television today. Each display we evaluate must pass a stringent battery of tests to guarantee it can accurately reproduce the original HD image, in precisely the colors, tones and resolution intended.”

Sharp LC-60HQ10 Product Highlights:

The new Sharp LC-60HQ10 is the world’s first THX 4K Certified display. The 60” model features Integrated Cognitive Creation (ICC) image technology, capable of reconstructing 4K2K images that look more realistic than traditional up-conversion pictures by analyzing the reflections of light on the original content. The unit features an LCD panel specifically designed to showcase ICC image reconstruction technology. As luxury models, Sharp 4K TVs are designed to meet high-end, high-quality needs of specialty retail and custom install markets. Sharp is the number one selling TV brand in Japan for 60” plus screen size classes.

THX at CES 2013:

THX will be explaining the THX 4K Certification process, demonstrating the new Sharp display in its Renaissance Hospitality Suite at CES 2013, in addition to showcasing additional THX Certified products. THX will also be highlighting its partnership with Sontia, demonstrating an innovative sound processing technology that enhances acoustic performance and reduces development/production costs across a more comprehensive set of speaker products than what exists today.

From the big screen to your screen, THX ignites your passion for exciting entertainment experiences. Founded by George Lucas and recognized by audiences around the globe, THX is synonymous with the design and certification of world-class cinemas, premium audio systems, 3D HDTVs and blockbuster movies.

THX Partners with HomeTheaterReview.com to make Instructional Video Series Widely Available

SAN RAFAEL, CA – November 29, 2012 – THX Ltd. today announced a multi-part video series of short educational tutorials that will be syndicated periodically by HomeTheaterReview.com and will address various issues consumers face when setting up a new or expanded home theater. It is easy to become overwhelmed by the abundance of products, features and configuration possibilities – along with the countless brands compelling consumers to purchase new products. THX wants to help alleviate this stress and clear up some of the confusion commonly encountered when designing an entertainment system.

The first THX Home Theater Made Easy video series, “Modern Challenges,” was produced by THX and applies the THX approach to an owner’s challenging Eichler designed home featuring giant glass windows, post and beam construction and an open floor plan. Distributed by leading audio/video outlet HomeTheaterReview.com and hosted in its educational section, THX is partnering with Home Theater Review to make it easy for anyone to access and absorb the knowledge of THX experts.

Each of the videos in the THX Home Theater Made Easy series will address a new topic, walking the viewer through the mindset and approach one should take when thinking about designing or updating their home theater. This particular series will feature the following topics:

The “THX Approach” – overview of the THX process and the first home theater challenge

How room layout and seating affect the overall experience

How to select the right size and display placement for your room

Where speakers and subwoofers should be placed for optimal audio

The importance of selecting compatible electronics

How to take control of your remote control

How to select appropriate settings for your overall home theater system

…and more!

“It’s easy to forget how complicated a modern home theater system can be to a new customer. With the rise of warehouse and big box stores that don’t always spend time educating the consumer – the need for simple, easy-to-understand information about home theater best practices is more relevant today than ever,” said Jerry Del Colliano, CEO and publisher of HomeTheaterReview.com. “The videos that THX has produced give consumers looking for basic education on key home theater topics something to sink their teeth into, which is why we are excited to partner with them to promote the video series as part of HomeTheaterReview.com’s educational section.”

Over the past 30 years, THX has certified thousands of movie theaters, post-production facilities, sound mixing rooms, consumer electronic devices, DVD/Blu-ray titles and car audio systems. Whether in the cinema, in your home or on the road, THX has the expertise to bring the ultimate entertainment experience to audiences worldwide. The THX Home Theater Made Easy video series is specifically designed to teach consumers how to go about designing a proper home theater while addressing real life concerns of families today. By following the “THX Approach,” anyone can optimize their home entertainment space.

BERLIN, Sep 04, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) - THX Ltd. today announced its partnership with Sontia® – the company that introduced the groundbreaking audiophile-grade Stable Phase audio Technology family (SPT) – to bring spectacular audio performance to consumers at all price points and across a more comprehensive set of audio and speaker products than what exists today. The companies will collaborate to deliver innovative sound processing technology that enhances audio performance as well as reduces development and production costs for consumer electronics manufacturers.

Due to the explosion of media across different platforms, there are many types of new speakers available today. Based on consumer interest and demand, manufacturers have been looking for a way to improve sound quality in small, thin speakers used in the majority of today’s portable devices – and at the same time, keep production costs in check. Sontia and THX are bringing an innovative solution to market with interest to date from home theater, tablet, auto and speaker companies.

“THX has proved to be a trusted brand, known for providing the ultimate benchmark and quality standards to deliver best-in-class entertainment,” said Chris Vernon, CEO, Sontia. “With its thought-leadership and deep subject matter knowledge of quality sound, THX will help to ensure that these collaborative products deliver the maximum level of performance possible and the overall experience consumers expect from the THX brand.”

Sontia and THX will work together to carefully analyze products and evaluate their capabilities, leveraging both Sontia’s critical testing lab and THX’s regime of precision tests. The goal of a two-layer testing approach is to provide the optimal audio performance relative to individual products.

“We are committed to working with our industry partners to ensure that any products and technologies that we help develop or certify define quality in their class,” said Matt Chrispen, director, business development, THX Ltd. “Our partnership with Sontia represents a particularly innovative expression of this commitment. Together, we will offer improved audio performance across a variety of consumer electronic products where small speakers could be enhanced with this technology – from smart phones, to headphones, to sound bars and other smaller-sized speakers.”

About Sontia:

THX Certified Facilities Provide Consumers around the World with the Highest Level of Audio and Image Performance – as the Filmmakers Intended – Delivering the Finest Cinematic Experiences

LAS VEGAS (Cinemacon 2012 – Booth # 2619) – April 24, 2012 – THX Ltd. today announced five new THX Certified facilities and THX Approved equipment that meet or exceed THX unique and rigorous standards for delivering a world-class cinematic experience: Basecamp Films, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (in progress); Chinese Theatres, Hollywood, CA; James Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment MBS Media Campus, Manhattan Beach, CA (in progress); Meyer Sound, Berkeley, CA; and SonicPool, Hollywood, CA.

THX has long been recognized as the company who has set the industry benchmark for delivering the finest entertainment experience, as the director intended. The company’s broad set of technology specifications enables cinema owners to design high quality theaters that offer an optimal presentation of a film anywhere in the world. This is achieved through a unique combination of architectural analysis, equipment validation and the configuration of the theater itself. THX works closely with cinema and facility owners to certify room acoustics, equipment choice, design and electronics that go into the booth. The following are the latest THX Certified Cinemas, studios and THX Approved equipment providers:

Basecamp Films: Basecamp Films is a film and television color grading and digital cinema mastering facility in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. When complete, the THX Certified 3D-stereoscopic mastering theatre will provide its regional clients with a critical viewing environment for the mastering and quality control of their digital cinema content and DCP packages. The THX Certified mastering theater at Basecamp will be Malaysia’s first certified digital cinema mastering facility. Basecamp Films also relies on THX cineSpace™ color management software to deliver the richest, most accurate color and image representation for the highest quality end results.

Chinese Theatres: Grauman’s Chinese Theatre is the most sought-after theatre in Hollywood for studio premieres. Fans flock to these events to see the celebrities arrive and walk the red carpet into the theatre. Rich in movie tradition, with its cement handprints and footprints in the forecourt, the Chinese Theatre immortalizes the brightest stars. More than four million visitors from all over the world visit The Chinese Theatre every year. THX has worked with Grauman’s over the years and through the theatre’s recent management change, helping the facility to consistently deliver the best performances to its customers.

Lightstorm Entertainment: The production company of movie director James Cameron has worked on films such as Terminator 2: Judgment Day, True Lies, Titanic and Avatar. Lightstorm signed a lease agreement in 2011 with MBS Media Campus, the state-of-the-art production lot in Manhattan Beach owned by the Carlyle Group and managed by Raleigh Studios, which puts the Academy Award winning director at the MBS Media Campus for his two highly anticipated sequels to Avatar – the most successful film of all time. Production for the sequels will continue to be on the cutting edge of motion picture technology utilizing the latest performance capture filming methods to create the Avatar universe. As the most technologically advanced major production studio outside of Hollywood, the MBS Media Campus also provides Cameron and Lightstorm a unique campus-like atmosphere, proximity to the Southern California coastline and an eco-friendly mandate. THX is working with Lightstorm to certify its screening room at MBS, which will ensure future films and content will be delivered to consumers as Cameron intended.

Meyer Sound: Meyer Sound has been devoted to meeting the needs of sound reinforcement professionals with the finest products available since 1979. Developed in collaboration with the top audio engineers in the cinema industry, the Meyer Sound EXP cinema system utilizes the company’s THX Approved screen channel and surround loudspeakers and subwoofers. Meyer Sound EXP sound systems are installed in commercial cinemas across North America, Europe and Asia. Film sound professionals also rely on EXP monitoring systems in post-production facilities such as Skywalker Sound, Wildfire Studios and American Zoetrope in California, as well as at De Lane Lea in London. The latest Meyer Sound equipment to be THX Approved is the Acheron Designer screen channel loudspeaker (THX pm3 Approved), which would typically be used for film sound design rooms and small theaters. Visit Meyer Sound at CinemaCon at booth #2610 and in demo room Neopolitan I.

“As cinemas continue the move towards digital innovations, including the delivery of 3D content, the industry is truly at the ground floor in terms of ways directors and producers can push content development and, at the end, enhance the entertainment experience,” said Jerry Zernicke, director, Professional Services, THX Ltd. “The ongoing challenge is for facilities to uphold quality standards to meet and exceed consumer demands and be able to accurately translate the true director’s intent to the consumer.”

The goal with the THX Cinema Certification program continues to be ensuring that the audio and video elements of a film are identical to how it was created in the studio, and that the vision is accurately translated to the movie goer without disruption in the cinema. As technology advances and the industry evolves, THX’s standards evolve as well, setting new requirements. One aspect that has remained consistent with the THX Cinema Certification program is the implementation of sound acoustic practices, which THX continues to execute nearly 30 years later.

THX cineCubeTM HD is specifically designed to emulate the ITU-Rec. 709 (HD video color standard) color space for facilities specializing in television commercials, music videos, corporate videos and television programs.

THX cineCube™ HD Provides Cost-Effective, Ideal Solution for Facilities Specializing in HD Video Applications

LAS VEGAS (NAB 2012 – SL14407) – April 16, 2012 – THX Ltd. today announced a new component to its THX cineSpace™ Color Management Suite, the de facto standard in film and television post-production for achieving color accuracy and consistency through display calibration and profiling. THX cineCube™ HD is specifically designed to emulate the ITU-Rec. 709 (HD video color standard) color space for facilities specializing in television commercials, music videos, corporate videos and television programs.

The THX cineSpace toolset is used by production companies, post facilities, animation studios, VFX companies, game developers, DI facilities and others to produce and render near-perfect representations of how images will appear in final form. It is a cost-effective way to implement precision color management at every stage of content production, post-production and delivery. With specific requirements from creative artists about the way color is displayed, color matching is a lengthy, iterative cycle in post-production. THX cineSpace cuts down on these cycles by removing the guesswork when dealing with film images and producing accurate image representations which can be viewed and manipulated on a digital workstation monitor or projector.

The new THX cineSpace module, cineCube HD, offers all the functionality needed to calibrate and profile displays of any type – projectors, plasmas and LCDs so artists can color grade material confidently, knowing that what they see in the suite will be duplicated in the target viewing environment. cineCube HD licenses include the full version of cineProfiler™, a THX cineSpace component that optimizes and profiles output devices and creates accurate profiles for all viewing equipment including CRT, LCD screens, plasma displays, digital projectors and broadcast monitors.

“THX cineSpace technology has brought a new level of confidence to monitoring at our facility with its high-precision color management toolset. Managing color with THX cineSpace across all of our finish and color suites provides quality assurance for our customers and increased workflow efficiency,” said Mark Pruett, owner of Nashville’s Storyville Post. “The introduction of an affordable, simplified solution that offers the same quality as THX cineSpace is exciting. cineCube HD makes THX cineSpace technology more cost-effective to boutique operations like ours – facilities that may have a narrower range of color management concerns, but still require the same precision and results that the original THX cineSpace software provides.”

THX at NAB 2012:

THX will be showcasing its new cineCube HD application and the full suite of THX cineSpace color management solutions at NAB booth #SL14407. In addition, THX will be demonstrating THX Media DirectorTM and highlighting its latest partners.

cineCube HD is available today through THX cineSpace resellers for $1,895 (one seat node).

LAS VEGAS (NAB 2012 – Booth # SL14407) – April 16, 2012 – THX Ltd. today announced new additions to its THX Media Director™ ecosystem, including the upcoming Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment release of Red Tails on Blu-rayTM and DVD, and new quality assurance partners, The Testing Group and Testronic Labs. THX Media Director is a technology that transforms digital media into smart content, enabling CE devices (i.e., Blu-ray players, set-top boxes, AVRs, HD displays) to automatically select the audio and video settings that best represent the director’s vision, vastly simplifying the home entertainment experience and preserving artistic intent.

Slated for release on May 22, the Red Tails Blu-ray set is the second Lucasfilm and Fox title to feature THX Media Director; the first being Star Wars: The Complete Saga, released in September 2011. THX worked with both companies to capture the picture and sound characteristics specific to this movie and encode that information on the THX Media Director enabled Red Tails Blu-ray and DVD products, so fans will be able to sit back and enjoy the high-flying, action-adventure film as its creators intended.

Compact Technology Design Provides Energy Efficiency and Superior All-Analog Sound Quality

LAS VEGAS (CES 2012 – Renaissance Hospitality Suites #632 and #639) – January 10, 2012 – THX Ltd. today announced a new, patented all-analog amplification technology that delivers superior sound quality in an energy efficient, compact design. This scalable THX technology enables the low-profile design of cool-running, high-powered amplifiers for use in everything from HDTVs, powered speakers, automotive audio systems and handheld devices to performance-driven applications, such as top-of-the-line audio/video receivers and audiophile-quality amplifiers. The fully analog design delivers sound quality on par with the finest Class A/B amplifiers while eliminating the radio-frequency emissions problems that plague most digital amplifiers.

“In the last few years, we’ve seen increased consumer demand for high-quality sound. Yet consumers don’t want to sacrifice space or design in order to get top audio performance,” said Brent Butterworth, contributing technical editor and home entertainment technology expert. “Thanks to the emergence of technologies such as high-efficiency amplifiers, it’s now possible to get outstanding performance from decor-friendly products such as desktop systems, sound docks and compact audio electronics.”

THX amplification technology addresses these demands by enabling consumer electronics manufacturers to create audio amplifiers that require a fraction of the power typically needed for such a device while still delivering premium quality, richly detailed audio performance.

“Having spent nearly 30 years measuring and setting audio and video standards that are difficult yet achievable, THX has developed an original approach to amplifier design to produce high performance sound quality while being energy efficient,” said Laurie Fincham, senior vice president of audio research and development, THX Ltd. “This unique patented combination of a flexible format using low-profile components which allows for compact designs presents new opportunities for CE manufacturers, enabling them to be highly innovative in creating powerful and cool audio designs for consumers in the home, in the car and on the go.”
