April 16-19, 2012 – Las Vegas, NV – At NAB 2012, THX will be showing their latest technologies; THX Media Director™ and THX cineSpace™.

Visit us at THX booth #SL14407 to learn more.

THX Media Director

We will be demonstrating how THX Media Director transforms digital media into smart content, enabling CE devices to select the most appropriate audio and video playback settings, simplifying the home entertainment experience and preserving artistic intent.

Analog Devices, Sigma Designs, Silicon Image and Quantum Data are all producing Media Director-enabled chipsets for use in CE products; this makes it easy and affordable for CE manufacturers to implement THX Media Director into Blu-ray players, AV receivers, TVs, and projectors.
THX’s Geoff Tully and Kevin Wines will be on hand at NAB to explain how Media Director works and how to master content for Media Director-enabled devices.

THX cineSpace Color Management Software

THX cineSpace is a mission critical tool in use in professional grading suites, VFX facilities and animation studios all over the world.
We will demonstrate how you can use THX cineSpace to calibrate displays, match color reproduction between monitors and projectors using different technologies (plasma, LCD, DLP, and so on) and emulate the look of your deliverable target on any display device.

THX’s Senior Color Scientist Michael Chenery will be at NAB along with Bob Caldwell to show you how you can use cineSpace technology in your facilities. They will be demonstrating all major components in the cineSpace suite:

cineProfiler™

Accurate color matching begins with precise profiling. cineProfiler optimizes and profiles your output devices and creates accurate profiles for all viewing equipment including, CRT, LCD screens, plasma displays, digital projectors, and broadcast monitors. Load these customized profiles into cineSpace Visual, equalEyes or one of our cinePlugins to ensure absolutely accurate color matching in your grading suites.

equalEyes™

The perfect tool for matching displays throughout a facility, equalEyes modifies the Lookup Table (LUT) in the workstation’s operating system to provide the artist with a perfectly calibrated monitor. Generate customized monitor profiles using the cineProfiler tool to emulate targets like sRGB, Rec. 709 and DCI. You can even configure the monitors to display a custom color temperature or gamma. The software provides your artists with user-defined presets that let them switch quickly between various monitors and target profiles to compare results on different display devices. You can match your entire facility to a single reference standard with equalEyes.

cineCube™ Visual

cineCube Visual is the ultimate application for building 3D calibration LUTs (cubes). It generates color transforms that you then use in equalEyes, hardware LUT runners with your color correction systems. cineCube Visual’s powerful user interface makes it easy to preview your LUTs and adjust the calibration parameters to dial in the emulated target you want. cineCube Visual offers a full range of cineSpace options, including inverse transforms, black point correction, white point adaptation, printer lights, and out-of-gamut settings, in addition to tools that analyze profiles and LUTs. Virtually every color grading system in the industry works with cineSpace LUTs. You can ensure precise color calibration throughout your facility, regardless of which animation and monitoring tools you select.

Description:

Capturing and refining creative intent in post is a science, an art form, as well as a labor of love that all members of the HPA understand and is a passion. A continuing frustration for many on the creative side is the challenge of reproducing the creative intent within the home theater environment. THX has been developing content-related metadata capture and distribution that can enable CE devices to automatically select appropriate audio and video playback settings based on the content. At CEDIA 2011, a THX Media Director enabled system was demonstrated on Blu-ray disc (the Star Wars Blu-ray box set) using a Blu-ray player by Dune HD and an Elite display. Integration of support for metadata processing in CE devices and transport via HDMI was announced by several key IC/SoC manufacturers, including Silicon Image and Analog Devices. At CES 2012, THX showed compatible devices by Epson and Indy Audio Labs. Rovi DVD and BD authoring tools already support the encoding of this metadata, but also announced at CES was support from authoring facilities BluFocus, Deluxe and re:fine.

THX will provide an overview of the workflow involved in creating and assembling metadata for optical media and OTT (streaming/download) content, and show how this facilitates delivering creative intent in the home.

In addition, THX is hosting three Breakfast Roundtables during the event, which are open to all attendees:

Background

On December 15, 2010, the CALM Act was enacted into law. Subsequently, this past December the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) adapted regulations as to controlling the relative loudness of commercials based on ATSC Recommended Practices A/85 – Techniques for Establishing and Maintaining Audio Loudness for Digital Television.

NY SMPTE Program

This program will provide a brief synopsis as to how loudness should be measured and how consistent loudness levels can be maintained using the practices described in ATSC A/85 and then segue into the FCC parameters and mandates that will be required by broadcasters and media content providers by December 13, 2012.

About Lon

Lon Neumann is a consulting engineer for THX and provides services to manufacturers, engineering companies, systems integrators, broadcasters and producers. His practice encompasses a focus on loudness management and surround sound management – including workflow-analysis, facility-design, product development, systems integration, loudspeaker/room-alignment, calibration and correction, metadata authoring/management, and standards-compliance for production, post production, ingest, distribution, and transmission. Lately, he has been conducting in-depth training seminars on the ATSC A/85 recommended practice for establishing and maintaining audio loudness for digital television. Lon wrote the chapter on digital audio in the American Society of Cinematographers’ Video Manual. He was the audio columnist at Television Broadcast magazine. He created and taught programs on the fundamentals and applications of digital audio technology at UCLA. He was the session chairman for Digital Interface at an Audio Engineering Society convention, and conducted a workshop on digital troubleshooting techniques at an AES convention. Lon Neumann is a member of AES, SMPTE and STE.
