The first Super Bowl was played on January 15, 1967. No one thought the event would spawn billions in advertising dollars and 46 years later be the reason 100 million pounds of chicken wings are eaten in a single day. In fact, no one even bothered to keep a copy of this first Super Bowl broadcast. Nonetheless, over the past 46 years that we’ve been watching “The Big Game,” it grew in glamour and popularity as the most watched sporting event in America.

Some of the appeal of Super Bowl Sunday is that it warrants a great opportunity to throw a party and hang out with friends and family. But if you’ve decided to host the Super Bowl at your house, just know that to impress friends you’ll likely have to either learn how to traverse a high wire, surpass the culinary expertise of Chef Mario Batali, or spend a little time sprucing up your entertainment system. Okay…so maybe the perfect risotto al tartufo is more impressive to some than the perfect picture, but we here at THX never claim to be masters of the kitchen and though we have a couple ambitious gymnasts in the office, for legal reasons we can’t recommend that you try any Cirque du Soleil-style party tricks.

Therefore, our recommendation for a successful Super Bowl party is to make sure your television’s picture settings look good. Properly adjusting your TV yields a big improvement to the viewing experience and since the reason you’re having the party is to watch TV, you might as well take a few minutes.

AVForums Picture Perfect Campaign

For a great tutorial on why it’s important to have a properly adjusted TV and what you’re missing when your TV is not, check out AVForums.com and read up on their Picture Perfect campaign, in which many of the leading manufacturers (and THX) have participated to lend a hand in consumer education.

Professional Calibration

THX always recommends professional video calibration through a THX Certified Video Calibrator, but the next best thing is to purchase a THX Certified Display that comes pre-configured with THX viewing modes. If you don’t have a THX Certified TV, you can either be one of the 7.5 million viewers that is expected to buy a new television for the game – or you can check out our new THX tune-up™ app for iOS devices (download it here from the iTunes store for free through Feb. 4).

THX tune-up™ app for iOS

THX tune-up is an easy-to-use, interactive app that lets the general consumer use an iOS device to adjust their TVs, projectors and speakers, to get the best performance and enjoyment from their entertainment system – regardless of brand and price. THX tune-up features custom video test patterns, carefully selected photos and tutorials to help you adjust and confirm the best picture settings on your display based on your room lighting. Using special test sounds, THX tune-up also lets you check your external speakers to make sure they are working in phase and are connected properly for 2-channel stereo or 5.1 surround sound systems. But the app is not just about test patterns. The Extras section is loaded with all sorts of fun stuff. Tip: Hit the THX Deep Note button at opening kickoff to let your guests know they’re in for an exciting entertainment experience.

With more than 200,000 downloads after three days of it’s launch, several amazing editorial reviews and even an Editor’s Choice Award from PC Mag, we hope even a handful of you will be able to better enjoy Super Bowl XLVII because of our app. Whether it’s the Big Game, the latest Hollywood blockbuster, or a re-run of your favorite sitcom, there is absolutely no reason why you shouldn’t get the best performance out of your TV and sound system – you invested time and money into it, so why not make sure it’s “tuned-up?”

After reading through the FAQ, if you’re still having trouble with the THX tune-up app, email tuneupsupport@thx.com.

1. Why is THX tune-up crashing or not opening when I launch it?

We have received some reports that THX tune-up is crashing or not opening when launched. We apologize for this problem and the inconvenience. Please tell us the details of your setup and problem by sending an email to tuneupsupport@thx.com with the following information:

Model of your iPhone or iPad

Version of iOS you are running on your phone/tablet

Amount of memory you have available on your device

The country where you are located

We are looking into causes and will have a solution to you as soon as possible.

2. When connecting my iDevice with Apple TV, why are the pictures and adjustments patterns not appearing on my TV?

Make sure that you have set the Apple TV to “Mirroring”. THX tune-up uses both your mobile device screen and your HDTV screen, making this an interactive 2nd screen application.

3. I’m using my iPhone 4 and Apple TV, but I cannot see anything on my television. What can I do?

THX tune-up does not work with the iPhone 4 and Apple TV. You must have a Digital AV Adapter and connect via HDMI with your iPhone 4 in order to see the images on your television.

4. How do I set up my Apple TV (3rd Generation) so I can see all videos, adjustment patterns, photos and graphics on my television?

The following set up will give the best results when using your Apple TV:

Connect your Apple TV:

Use an HDMI cable to connect your Apple TV to your AVR or HDTV

On your Apple TV select the following settings:

Settings -> Audio & Video:
Select: Dolby Digital: On
Select: AirPlay Overscan: Off

On your iOS device,

Connect via AirPlay to your AppleTV
Turn “Mirroring” ON

5. Why do I only see 2 channel speakers in the Sound Adjustments section? I selected a 5.1 setup in the Equipment selection screen.

For 5.1 speaker assignment and phase adjustments you must do all of the following:

Connect with an HDMI cable

Select 5.1 Speakers in the Equipment Tab

Select HDMI Mobile Connection in the Equipment Tab

6. The Digital AV Adapter with the 30 pin connector keeps falling off my iPhone 4, 4s or iPad 2, 3, 4. What can I do?
OR
Which cable should I use when I’m connecting my iOS device to my AVR or TV?

Try the following:

Use a generic HDMI cable that is flexible and longer (longer than 2m/6ft)

Use the 2nd generation Apple Digital AV Adapter – it has a connector lock which doesn’t detach as readily from the phone/tablet and the cable extension on the adapter is a little longer

The new AV adapter model number is A1422 versus A1388 for the 1st gen. The new part number is MD098ZM/A (MC953ZM/A is the old part number).

7. What is the best length HDMI cable to use?

Use at least a 2 meter (6 feet) cable. Depending on the location of your AVR/HDTV and your optimal/preferred viewing location, you may find that a 3-8 meter (10′-25′) cable may be needed.

8. What audio mode should I set my AVR?

Set your AVR to Direct mode (or “Digital Auto Detect” or equivalent) as this will allow the AVR to process the Dolby Digital (AC3) audio which is used for the 5.1 playback when using a HDMI connection.

9. Where can I find more information about the best setup of my home entertainment system?

You will find many more resources on the THX Educational resources on THX Website at: http://www.thx.com/consumer/home-entertainment/home-theater/

10. How much time should I allow to use the app to set up my home theater?

It will vary, but you should allow 10-30 minutes. You can stop at any time and come back later. Also, because the app is very interactive, you can perform the all of the adjustments or just the adjustments and features that you want without having to complete the entire experience in one use.

11. The audio and/or the video stutters or has drop outs when using my Apple TV.
OR
Why does the audio narration or sound adjustments audio drop in & out on my speakers?

This is usually caused by your Local Area Network (LAN) setup. Apple has an article on how to troubleshoot this issue at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4215. Note: You will have the best quality audio and video playback by using an HDMI connection.

12. I’m having difficulty holding my iPhone or iPad while using the camera filter and doing the picture adjustments. What can I do?

We acknowledge that this can be tricky. You may find that doing any or all of the following will help.

Use a 2nd gen A/V adapter which has a connector lock and doesn’t detach as readily. See Question 6.

Use a longer (>= 2m/6ft) flexible HDMI cable.

Place the iPad in a stand on the table. It makes it easier to point and can be done with one hand while you are adjusting the TV remote with the other.

Install the THX tune-up app on your iPhone and use the camera from there. The iPhone is much easier to hold and is not tethered to the TV/AVR with the HDMI cabling.

If you are using a case for your iPhone/iPad, the case may interfere with making a solid connection of the cable. You may need to remove your iPhone/iPad from the case to get a good connection.

13. The HDMI cable disconnected and I reconnected it, but the audio and video is not re-syncing. What should I do?

The app will attempt to re-sync, but you may need to close the application and reopen.

14. When connected to my TV with Apple TV, why are the pictures and adjustments patterns not appearing on my TV?

Make sure that you have set the Apple TV to “Mirroring” to “ON.” See Q4.

15. Why is the audio for the “Get Started” video so low?
OR
Why do I have to turn the volume on my AVR so high to hear the audio narration during the adjustments section?

Your AVR and/or speakers may not be properly configured or connected. For example, if your AVR is set to 5.1 or 7.1 speakers but you only have a 2 speakers (and maybe a subwoofer) connected. Go to the speaker setup menus of your AVR and set the speakers to match your actual configuration.

16. When performing the Tint or Color adjustment, the camera is jerky and doesn’t reflect what is on the TV. What should I do?

Please hold the camera as still as possible when pointing it at the television, wait for it to be displayed on your mobile device, and then make the adjustment. The camera refresh rate is dependent on the speed of your iOS device. This refresh rate is as slow as 1-2 updates per second.

17. When playing the “Get Started” video and my phone is in portrait mode, is there any way to make the video full screen on the TV?

When using a device with iOS 6.0.1 or 6.1, place your iPhone or iPad in landscape to display the video full screen on the TV. for the best display on the TV or Projector when using iOS 6.0.1 or 6.1. When using a device with iOS 5.1.1, the displayed video will always play in full screen, regardless of device orientation (portrait or landscape).

18. I’m connected via VGA or Component. Is there any way to have the “Get Started” video display full screen on the television?

While you can connect to your television via VGA or Component, the video will not be full screen, and the picture quality won’t be the best. For the best performance from your mobile device, connect your device directly to your AVR/HDTV via HDMI with a Digital AV adapter.

19. Why do I not get any audio output in the Sound Adjustments section? I have a 5.1 system.

Ensure that you are connected directly from your device with a HDMI cable to your AVR. If you’ve reported in the Equipment screen that you have HDMI and a 5.1 speaker setup, and are connected via some other means such as AirPlay with AppleTV or an analog connection, no audio will be heard.

20. When will I be able to use THX tune-up to test my 7.1 speaker setup?

This capability may be available in a future release.

THX tune-up™ is Available Free for One Week Worldwide, then Will be Offered at $1.99 in Select Countries

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – January 29, 2013 – THX Ltd. today announced its first mobile app, THX tune-up™, which is now available in the iTunes App Store. THX tune-up is an easy-to-use, interactive app that lets the general consumer use an iOS device to adjust their TVs, projectors and speakers, to get the best performance and enjoyment from their entertainment system – regardless of brand and price.

THX tune-up arrives just in time for this year’s Big Game. According to research conducted by the Retail Advertising and Marketing Association, more than 7.5 million viewers are expected to buy a new television specifically for the game.1 To help all home viewers get on a level playing field and enjoy their new or existing TVs on this big day, THX is offering the app worldwide for free for the first week of its release (January 29 – February 4, 2013). THX tune-up will then be available at its regular price of U.S. $1.99 in select countries.2

“By using the THX tune-up app, sports fans, movie enthusiasts, gamers and even reality show addicts can confirm their TV and sound system are set up correctly. THX tune-up guides consumers simply and easily through picture and sound adjustments to get the best possible entertainment experience from their home system,” said Sandra Benedetto, director of product management, THX Ltd. “We also included fun stuff, like links to THX cinema trailers and our signature “THX® Deep Note™” sound that are bound to evoke envy on a newly ‘tuned-up’ system.”

THX tune-up features

Using specifically custom designed video patterns and audio tests, THX tune-up allows consumers to check that video equipment settings are optimized based on the consumer’s equipment capabilities and lighting environment, and external speakers are working in phase and are connected properly. For instance, color and tint settings are often complicated to adjust properly without special glasses or other unique equipment. THX tune-up uses the iPad or iPhone camera and a special, THX-designed built-in color filter to help consumers easily ensure colors are accurate and skin tones appear natural.

The interactive app provides users step-by-step instructions via narration and text, as well as a detailed guide on how to use all of its features, walking consumers through the following tests:

Video adjustments

Aspect ratio – ensures your TV displays shapes and sizes correctly

Brightness – makes certain shadow details and night scenes are clearly visible

Contrast – ensures that white detail is distinct on your television

Color – make sure colors are bright and vibrant but not overly saturated or cartoonish

The growing popularity of mobile devices is changing the landscape of consumer entertainment. With 50 percent of adult Americans owning either a smart phone or a tablet or both, according to a recent Pew Research report, the television is rapidly ceding ground as the device of choice for entertainment. Video on small, portable and mobile consumer electronic devices has improved tremendously over the past few years. Unfortunately, audio has largely been left behind, caught between two opposing demands, more output power and smaller size – until now.

At CEDIA 2012, THX announced a partnership with Sontia, an audio technology company that has developed several audio processing technologies, including Sontia SPT – an innovative sound processing technology designed to enhance the acoustic performance of some of today’s most widely used consumer electronics. The technology allows for high-quality sound (with reduced development/production costs) in devices that rely on small, thin speakers for audio, including smart phones, headphones, speaker bars, and other compact and portable consumer devices; even cars.

Sontia and THX are working together to carefully analyze products and evaluate their capabilities, leveraging both Sontia’s critical testing lab and THX’s regime of precision tests. The goal of a two-layer testing approach is to provide the optimal audio performance relative to individual products.

THX’s partnership with Sontia helps us continue to innovate and deliver the best possible entertainment experience for both video and audio. Just because the device is tiny doesn’t mean the sound has to be – whether watching a movie on your phone or playing music through a speaker bar, we believe quality audio should be the standard on all devices.

The partnership between THX and Sontia is being illustrated through sound processing technology demonstrations at CES 2013.

Sharp THX 4K Certified ICC Purios LC-60HQ10 display

Over the past few months, leading CE manufacturers began announcing the availability of new Ultra HD televisions capable of displaying 4K content. You might have already read articles either outlining why you should invest in an Ultra HD set, or on the opposite spectrum, why Ultra HD televisions are not necessary for the average consumer. So when does it actually matter if your television’s resolution is 4K versus standard high definition?

The answer to this question is largely subjective and should also encompass other factors, so THX suggests you consider your viewing habits and environment, a long with the display’s ability to present “upconverted” standard HD content as the first steps to determine if you’re likely to benefit from this new technology.

Factor 1: Screen Size

As displays grow in size, and/or viewing distance decreases, the benefits of higher resolutions such as 4K become easier to identify. This reasoning is based on the fixed number of pixels that make up a display screen. A standard 1080p HD television has a total of approximately two million pixels which together display the on-screen image. This is true regardless of screen size, meaning that a 46-inch 1080p display and a 70-inch 1080p display both have approximately two million pixels. However, when you divide these two million pixels into the surface area for a 46-inch television, you end up with approximately 2,700 pixels per square inch. When you compute the same figure for a 70-inch television, the number drops to approximately 1,780 pixels per square inch. eight,

If your eyes glazed over when reading the technical explanation above – simply put, it is easier to see pixels on a larger screen because each of the pixels is physically larger in size. The larger the screen, the more likely you’ll recognize the image clarity and sharpness benefits of Ultra HD displays.

Your eyesight, quality of the display itself and various other factors influence the point at which a person can distinguish individual pixels on a display of a given size. Nonetheless, for the overwhelming majority of consumers with a home television viewing distance of six feet or greater, the benefits of increased screen resolution will be recognized when viewing 4K content on a display 55 inches or larger.

Factor 2: Viewing Distance

On a 50-inch 1080p HD display, most consumers can begin to distinguish individual pixels only when standing within six feet of the screen. Therefore if your viewing distance is 10 feet or greater, an Ultra HD 50-inch display will likely have little perceived benefit in terms of image clarity and sharpness – which can be attributed directly to the increase in pixel count. On the other hand, if you work in a field such as graphic design and sit approximately two feet from your 32-inch display, even at a screen size of just 32 inches, the benefits of 4K resolution will likely be noticeable as a result of the narrow viewing distance.

Factor 3: 4K Content

If you’ve been keeping tabs on all the Ultra HD chatter, you’ve probably heard someone complain about the lack of native 4K content. That is, content captured at 4K resolution (3840 x 2160 or 4096 x 2160 pixels), or existing HD content that’s been digitally transferred into a higher resolution. Until the content industry catches up, consumers who invest in an Ultra HD display are reliant on displays that are able to convert and present a standard HD image at 4K resolution – a technology commonly referred to as “upscaling” or “upconverting.” But proceed with caution. Although these technologies are meant to enhance your existing HD content, they can often introduce unwanted artifacts, making images look unnatural.

To address this, THX worked with Sharp to certify its new ICC Purios LC-60HQ10 as the world’s first THX 4K Certified display, putting it through 400 laboratory tests to ensure HD and Ultra HD images are presented pristinely and to the highest standard. The new THX 4K Certification program is an assurance of image quality and consistency, confirming that a display not only meets industry 4K performance guidelines, but that it maintains content accuracy true to the original HD image. For example, THX evaluates color precision and clarity, analyzing image detail to make certain essential film elements such as grain and texture do not disappear. Sharp uses a unique technology called Integrative Cognitive Creation (ICC) to upconvert the picture into a 4K2K image by analyzing reflections of light on original content. This unique technology is capable of reconstructing 4K2K images that look more realistic than other upconverted pictures.

Conclusion

In summary, when comparing an Ultra HD TV to a standard HDTV, the higher resolution display allows you to sit closer to the screen before being able to distinguish the pixels. Or if considering the inverse, you can purchase a larger size television without having to increase your viewing distance before individual pixels can be seen.

Whether sitting closer or viewing content on a larger screen, once you’ve seen the crystal clear and lifelike quality of 4K pictures it may be difficult to go back to watching content on a standard HDTV. For those considering an upgrade to an Ultra HD display, our recommendation is that armed with the knowledge gained from reading this blog, you measure your current viewing distance and visit a local home theater retailer. Only then will you be able to stand at the same viewing distance and compare the picture quality between various sizes of HD and Ultra HD displays.

Sharp’s New LC-60HQ10 Receives World’s First THX® 4K Certification

LAS VEGAS (CES 2013 – Renaissance Hospitality Suites #530 and #539) – January 8, 2013 – THX Ltd. today announced its THX® 4K Certification program, which features newly developed tests and parameters to ensure that the latest 4K HD televisions are able to present content in full Ultra High-Definition (Ultra HD) resolution with image clarity far superior to that of conventional HDTVs. THX 4K Certified televisions not only meet industry 4K performance guidelines but also present content that most accurately reconstructs the original HD master image. The new Sharp LC-60HQ10 is the world’s first THX 4K Certified display, capable of converting standard HD content into a 4K2K picture with staggering detail and precision, bringing the entertainment experience to life.

The THX 4K Certification program is the only performance standard currently available for higher resolution displays. To be awarded this certification, displays must pass up to 600 rigorous tests and measurements to ensure HD and Ultra HD images are presented accurately and to the highest standard. THX evaluates color precision, clarity, uniformity and detail to analyze how well a 4K or Ultra HD display can depict a variety of critical image elements while minimizing the perceived effects of grain and other flaws. THX Certified displays will feature a new setting, the THX 4K Movie Mode, which delivers the best possible pre-calibrated video settings for viewing Ultra HD and reconstructed HD movies right out-of-the box.

“With consumers today demanding more immersive and compelling home entertainment experiences, the industry has moved beyond HDTVs toward even higher resolution displays that offer a whole new level of entertainment realism in the home,” said Peter Vasay, vice president of technology operations at THX Ltd. “Our new THX 4K Certification process ensures that content viewed on a THX Certified Ultra HD display meets the most exacting video standards achievable in a consumer television today. Each display we evaluate must pass a stringent battery of tests to guarantee it can accurately reproduce the original HD image, in precisely the colors, tones and resolution intended.”

Sharp LC-60HQ10 Product Highlights:

The new Sharp LC-60HQ10 is the world’s first THX 4K Certified display. The 60” model features Integrated Cognitive Creation (ICC) image technology, capable of reconstructing 4K2K images that look more realistic than traditional up-conversion pictures by analyzing the reflections of light on the original content. The unit features an LCD panel specifically designed to showcase ICC image reconstruction technology. As luxury models, Sharp 4K TVs are designed to meet high-end, high-quality needs of specialty retail and custom install markets. Sharp is the number one selling TV brand in Japan for 60” plus screen size classes.

THX at CES 2013:

THX will be explaining the THX 4K Certification process, demonstrating the new Sharp display in its Renaissance Hospitality Suite at CES 2013, in addition to showcasing additional THX Certified products. THX will also be highlighting its partnership with Sontia, demonstrating an innovative sound processing technology that enhances acoustic performance and reduces development/production costs across a more comprehensive set of speaker products than what exists today.
